After a few midterms and late nights studying we arrived in Port Louis, Mauritius. Sadly, this was just a fuel stop so we were only there for the day and were required to be on a SAS field program.

We headed out in the morning and are first visit was to Trou aux Cerfs which is a volcanic crater that is 280 feet deep and 656 feet wide and we were able to see spectacular island views from the rim of the crater.

Next, we went to Alexandra Falls which was situated in a lush green valley. On the way to lunch we stopped to pick Chinese Guava’s which looked like tiny pomegranates and tasted really sweet. We went to Ebony Restaurant for lunch for a local lunch. It was a lot of mashed things and they gave us a crepe looking bread to make like a little burrito which was actually pretty good!

After lunch, we headed to zipline at La Vallée des Couleurs Nature Park which has the 3rd longest zip line in the world. The views from the zipline were spectacular and we all got to ride superman style. Before heading back to the ship, we walked around the nature park and saw huge tortoises, goats and the 23 colored earth.

Things I learned:

  • The official language is English, but most speak French Creole
  • The country reminds me of Grand Cayman and Haiti combined
  • The day we visited, March 11, it was their 50th independence day
